Men of the Year 2020
Each year the faculty and students vote on 12 students who represent and embody De Smet’s ideals, they are named Men of the Year. The men and their first thoughts of being honored are below.
Jacob Alu
“To me, being recognized as one of the Men of the Year shows that our class and teachers acknowledge that we understand and embody the values of what De Smet has taught us. We have been able to put into practice how to be men and women for and with others and I appreciate all of those who've helped me on this journey."
Alex Bentele
“Being a Man of the Year means to me that the people around me appreciate how I behave and treat others inside and outside of school. The De Smet community is a group of people that can all root for each other. Even though we all have our differences, we can come together behind one banner."
Jack Burton
"It was honestly a great surprise and honor to be included with the 11 other guys. I am very lucky that I had such a great experience at De Smet."
Timothy Chiapel
"Being chosen as a Man of the Year along with 11 other incredible guys is a huge honor. I'm so thankful for everything De Smet has done for me in making me the man that I am today."
John Fotouhi
“I’m honored to be put in the same category as the rest of the men of the year, and I look forward to trying to live up to that standard in the years to come.”
Tyler Fahland
“I’m almost at a loss for words. I mean, I knew there was a chance but I didn’t think I would actually receive one. I’m honored to be recognized alongside some of the best men from the class of 2020.”
Sebastian Martin
“It is really an honor to receive the award. De Smet has done so much for me and the thought that I would get an award from them is truly awesome. I think we are all men of the year in our own ways, some more publicly than others. Every student at De Smet embodies what it means to be a Man for Others in some way and I wish every senior could be honored for their contributions to our class.”
Roger Melton
“The past three years at those awards assemblies, I looked up to those who were in the position because I saw the lasting impacts these students left on De Smet. Being able to be recognized in the same way past role models for me were as well as eleven other outstanding classmates is just so humbling.”
James Otto
“I was happy to know that my classmates and teachers saw me as someone who worked hard to make a positive impact on De Smet.”
Seth Roggenkamp
"It was definitely a surprise hearing my name announced as one of the Men of the Year. It took me a couple of minutes to kind of realize what was said. After that, I was very excited to have been voted for this award and celebrated with my family. The community at De Smet helped me grow immensely into the man I am today. For all of the things we have been through, especially my class, I realized the...
Anthoine Shell
"I was excited and happy because I beat out a lot of great seniors. It was worth doing all the extra work to be named as one of the Men of the Year. It was also humbling to be mentioned with all the other great Spartans. The De Smet community has shown so much love and support to this shy and unsure kid that walked through De Smet doors four years ago. They inspire me to be the best version of myself...
Armon Wallace
“It was a very humbling experience to know that I am loved by my De Smet community and that many people see me as a man for people to look up to.”
