The De Smet Dionysian Players (DDP) will perform the play The Outsiders Nov. 7-9 in the Thomas F. Hunter, Jr Memorial Theatre.
“I was looking for something based on a book, and every other week students were asking, ‘Can we do The Outsiders?’,” Theatre Director Nicholas Moramarco said. “It was high on my list and something the students had an interest in.”
The play is based on the novel The Outsiders. It tells the story of two different groups of teenagers from opposite social classes. Tension brews between the two as the working-class teens are called the Greasers, while the upper-middle-class teens are referred to as the Socs.
The two groups don’t get along well, and they resort to violence very quickly to resolve their differences.
“This violence leads to sort of terrible things for this small community,” Moramarco said. “It’s all about street fighting, stealing each other’s girlfriends, all that stuff teenagers deal with.”
The lead role is Ponyboy Curtis, the narrator, who will be played by William Lambert ‘29. The brothers of Curtis are Sodapop and Darry, who will be played by Chase Pule ‘27 and Ben Duffy ‘26.
Juniors Peter Marvin and Aiden Hadican will also get the spotlight in this show, as they will take on a big fight scene.
“I’m always happy to include as many different types of students as we can,” Moramarco said. “I’m loving their involvement, and they’re enjoying themselves.”
The play will have two 7 pm showings on Friday, Nov. 7, and Saturday Nov. 8, along with one 2 pm showing on Sunday Nov. 9. The play will be free for all faculty, staff, and students. Tickets will be seven bucks for all others.
This production is the largest Moramarco has done in his four-year theatre tenure. It will include 24 high schoolers, while five of those will be female roles. There is also the possibility of a few middle schoolers being included as well.
“The bigger the cast, the bigger the audience sizes,” Moramarco said. “The energy of the audience feeds off the energy they cast, and that’s what most excites me.”
