Students will have the opportunity to take part in a paid internship at the Art Museum this fall thanks to new Personal and Academic Counselor Calvin Kohler introducing it to the school.
“The school and I want to see kids succeed and do meaningful work,” Kohler said. “If you can use your time well then this program will be something that is going to progress you in the direction that you want to go.”
When working with this program students can become a tour guide and tour with kids and adults while looking at the art. Kohler said this is a great opportunity to meet important people and improve student’s networking skills.
“If you’re interested in going into the arts, this would be a fantastic resume builder for you to apply to a college,” Kohler said. “Especially because it might be competitive and you would have some real-world experience.”
The application process for this program consists of one written component where the person being interviewed is given a prompt that they have to write as to why they want to work there and what their future goals are. It is all online at the Saint Louis Art Museum website. If chosen, students will receive an email and a phone call.
“There’s going to be two dates, usually a Tuesday or a Thursday,” Kohler said. “Then you pick the one you want to go to, and you show up.”
During the summer there are a lot more opportunities for hours. Students can only work on Saturdays during the school year. This is because they don’t want to pull students away from what they care about most: their education.
“You’re going to be working with other people in the art industry,” Kohler said. “You will be getting a great real-life experience that can transition into future opportunities that will help you progress in life.”
