Will Poelker battles for position towards the finish line at the Missouri Class 4 State Championship Nov. 4, 2022. Poelker, who finished 24th, returns for his junior year.

The boys cross country team looks to win districts and finish on the podium at state this season.

The top six returning runners include Will Poelker, Brian Bessir, Mateo Perales, Harrison Williams, Ben Alexander, and Will Ortbals.

Poelker was De Smet’s top finisher in the Missouri Class 4 State Championship meet last year as a sophomore, finishing 24th. Returning Senior Brian Bessire finished 37th. Four state runners including the 24th (Will Poelker) and 37th (Brian Bessire) finishers will return this year. According to head coach Brian Traughber, Poelker and Bessire are the best returning scoring duo in at least the past decade.

The team opens their season on Aug. 29 in the Fleet Feet Classic at Arnold City Park.
