What, where and when you want it

Andrew Farrar, Staff Writer

Growing up, the thought of streaming services was a pipe dream. We watched what was on TV, or if there was a movie we really wanted to see we would go to Blockbuster or Redbox. But those selections were limited. Fast forward 16 years since Netflix first started streaming in 2007. Streaming allows you to watch what you want, where you want, when you want, and has become the preferred method of watching for millions around the world.

Streaming has so many positives. The world continues to evolve, and the way people watch their favorite shows and movies has evolved too. With streaming, your options are almost endless. Between Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+, HBO Max, Paramount+, and so many others, the chances of a show or movie you want to watch not being on one of them is close to none.

Streaming also creates so many more opportunities for more services to create their own originals. Netflix has Stranger Things, Amazon Prime has The Boys, and every other service has their own. These shows are getting some of the best reviews while being unavailable for anyone who only uses cable.

I get the argument for cable, I grew up with it. The last thing that tied me to cable was the ability to watch sports. However, in recent years streaming took that over too. Amazon Prime has Thursday night football, AppleTV+ has Sunday night MLB games, Hulu has live sports, and with ESPN+ you can watch almost every other game.

As more households keep gradually phasing out cable and replacing them with multiple of their favorite streaming services, the popularity of them will only continue to grow. Cable is in the past, streaming is the future.
