School work not homework

More teachers should be giving out less homework to reduce stress level in students

Jacob Young, Editor-in-chief

After having school all day, and finally leaving, students have to come home and do hours of homework.

A high schooler who take at least five different classes could have up to 17.5 hours of homework a week plus the 6-8 hours they go to school each day for the five days a week. Plus one in four high school students have jobs, which they work about an average of 10-20 hours a week.

So why are students given so much homework or given any homework at all? Teachers will say that students will forget what they learned in class and teach them what a job is like. Students will say they will be fine without the homework because many students can listen during class and retain everything. Every student is different and some kids need the homework so that they can retain what they learned in class while others, could go home having already retained everything.

Most students would beg their teachers to not give them homework because there are so many other things on a student’s plate like: family, a job, service, sports, and just getting enough sleep.

The one solution for this problem, is give homework but if the student gets an A on his test or quiz then exempt that student from all of the homework over that topic. Therefore for the students who get A’s without having to do any homework can get the good grades while the other kids do the homework and retain the knowledge that way.

Homework is not pointless but sometimes it is just too much for some students, so by either finding an alternate way of grading homework or not assigning any homework at all. It could save many students from unneeded stress and allow students to catch up on sleep they are missing because of the other things that they have to worry about.
