De Smet Soccer Wins District Title
De Smet soccer triumphed over the CBC Cadets by a score of 2-1 Thursday night to bring home the 2015 Class 4 District 4 title.
Senior midfielder Griffin Morgan was constantly moving. Making big plays all over the field, the captain just seemed like he was always in the right place at the right time. This was clearly evident in two of the biggest moments of the game.
When junior defender David Meyerhof sent in a free kick from midfield, the ball was deflected by CBC goalie Johnny Huber and fell right into Morgan’s lap. He proceeded to drive the ball home to give De Smet the first tally of the night.
Just minutes later the Spartans put up another goal on a perfectly placed pass from junior midfielder Jack Klinger to senior captain Nick Hanson who put the ball away with a single touch to put his team up 2-0 before halftime. At that point, the momentum was entirely in favor of De Smet with the student section in full force.
The Cadets struck back in the second half with a goal by senior AJ Palazzolo to make the score 2-1 and the score would remain that way the rest of the night.
Morgan’s second and arguably biggest play of the night was a goal-saving head ball on a CBC shot that got past goalie Connor Range. Morgan’s acute timeliness and positioning helped preserve De Smet’s 2-1 lead in the waning moments of the game.
Last night secured De Smet’s first Distrct title since 2011 when it eventually went on to win the state championship.
The soccer spartans’ next game will be Tuesday night against the number one ranked SLUH Billikens.
