N.L. Wild Card Recap

Patrick McHugh, News Editor

The highly anticipated N.L. wild card game between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago Cubs proved to be one sided as the Cubs shutout the Pirates 4-0 thanks to an impressive pitching performance by Jake Arietta and poor hitting from the Pirates.

Arietta seemed to dominate the game by shutting down Pittsburgh’s top hitters Andrew McCutchen and Starling Marte who made little impact throughout the game. Dexter Fowler scored a 2 run homerun for the Cubs in the third and Kyle Schwarber scored a single run homer in the 5th.  Jake Arietta had hit two pirates players early in the game which caused A fight to break out in the 7th inning thanks to Pirate’s closing pitcher Tony Watson who hit Jake Arietta as he was batting which caused a bench clearing brawl. It was perhaps the first time a bench clearing brawl had happened in a playoff game, however it seemed to not affect the Cubs as they continued to keep control of the game.

This marks the first time the Cubs have won a postseason game in 12 years. The Cubs will face the Cardinals in the NLDS on October 9th 2015 at Busch Stadium.
