Blocky blunder

Watching “A Minecraft Movie” brought back many nostalgic memories of playing Minecraft. The film would fall into the action/comedy category, as it had some unintentionally funny moments with many non-violent action scenes. Most of the movie takes place in the video game world and clashes real-life characters with animated characters from the game.

The movie follows five main misfit protagonists: Steve (Jack Black), Garett Garrison (Jason Mamoa), Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry (Sebastian Hansen), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks). Steve gets pulled through a mysterious portal in a mineshaft and gets sucked into an alternate video game dimension called the Overworld, where imagination and creativity help you survive. A while later Garett, Natalie, Henry, and Dawn stumble upon the same portal and all get sucked in as well. Right away they are attacked by monsters, but Steve saves the day. During this commotion, the earth crystal – which is needed to escape the Overworld – is destroyed. Now they are stuck in the Overworld until they can find another earth crystal, and also stop the antagonist video game character Malgosha from taking over the Overworld. Malgosha is a gold-obsessed Piglin ruler of another alternate dimension within the game called the Nether. Steve, Garett, Natalie, Henry, and Dawn team up with characters within the game to stop Malgosha and her army of Piglins from invading the Overworld, and ultimately get home to their normal lives.

Black did great as always, his performance playing Steve was one of his more unique roles. He embraced it well and put himself out there with lots of funny scenes, and odd moments. Mamoa did a phenomenal job playing the role of an unsuccessful washed-up gamer. Mamoa was hilarious throughout the movie as his character had a big ego and a dumb personality. Although very young, Hansen played his role well and was the underdog character in the movie. He didn’t have much of a personality, but did a good job playing his role as a nerdy teenager. Myers and Brooks did mediocre jobs, as their roles were not as important, but they still contributed to the film.

I liked how the graphics were resemblant of the game, while also looking very detailed and realistic. I also enjoyed how they followed the rules of Minecraft and used the items the same way they used in the game. Although the major blow to the film was the plot. It was not deep enough and felt very vague, nothing went into much detail.

I would definitely recommend this film to anyone who’s played Minecraft. Although this movie would not be enjoyable to viewers who have never played or have much knowledge about the game. With a rating of PG, this movie is viewable for people of all ages who like video games, adventure, and comedy. In the end “A Minecraft Movie” was very disappointing and did not live up to the hype.
