Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the future of music. Over the past year, ChatGPT AI bots have had an increase in usage all over the globe. AI has been used by people to ask simple questions all the way to much more sophisticated use like the implication of “Deep Faked Voices”. Deep Fakes are when a video or voice of a person in which their face, body, or voice has been digitally altered so that they appear to be someone else or represent another person. It is typically used maliciously or to spread false information. However, sometimes it can be used for good.
In the case of AI, it can be used in entirely good ways to create good music with the voices of the artist that we love, create a beat and lyrics that we like, along with a voice we think would fit. Recently, there has been a wave of people using AI to deepfake the voices of popular songwriters and use them to produce lyrics to an AI-generated beat. Many AI-generated songs have been made recently using the voices of fan-favorite rappers like Drake, The Weeknd, Playboi Carti, Future, 21 Savage, etc. In 2023 there was a song dropped named “Heart on My Sleeve” with a Drake and Weeknd collaboration, however, it wasn’t actually them. The song was AI-generated and was written by an unknown TikTok user by the name of GhostWriter977. Due to the fact that there are much broader legal concerns about how AI-generated music applies to copyright concerns the song was ultimately removed from Spotify.
Not only can AI be used to create songs we all like, it can also be used by rappers to come up with lyrics they can’t think of. For example, many people’s favorite rappers can go years without releasing a new album, Carti, Tyler the Creator, Kendrick Lamar, etc. AI could help these artists release albums more consistently and frequently by coming up with lyrics and beats that can guarantee a hit song.
There have been many legal disputes about the copyright laws of AI music and it has ultimately been decided that completely AI-generated music cannot be copyrighted. This is because copyright protection requires a human creator, and AI-generated content is not considered to be the work of a human. Because the copyright issues of AI music have been resolved, I think it is the future of music and can be used to create songs for everyone that they love.
